TONY PAGANO - SAXOPHONE,
FLÛTE
Né à Philadelphie en Pennsylvanie (USA), Tony
Pagano débute le saxophone avec son père puis
prend des cours de clarinette classique à l’âge
de 13 ans. Un an plus tard, au club Harlem,Tony découvre
le quartet de Charlie Parker avec Thelonious Monk au piano,
Tommy Potter à la basse et Max Roach à la batterie
: c’est un choc. A partir de ce moment, il ne cessera
de dire que cette rencontre a bouleversé sa vie. Il
apprend aussi à jouer du saxophone et s’initie
aux principes du jazz tout en poursuivant ses études
classiques. Toute sa carrière sera ainsi marquée
par cette double expérience. Il pratiquera longtemps
au plus haut niveau ces deux orientations musicales.
En 1951, il rencontre Bill Evans qui le fait entrer au Southeastern
Louisiane College où il est immédiatement intégré dans
le jazz band de Harry Evans, frère de Bill. A la même époque,
il joue de la clarinette dans l’Orchestre Symphonique
de Bâton Rouge et du saxophone dans plusieurs formations
de jazz de la région. Militaire de 1954 à 1956,
il enseigne la clarinette et le saxophone dans l’école
de musique de la Marine à Washington DC et consacre
ses soirées à des “bœufs” avec
les grands musiciens de jazz de cette ville dont le saxophoniste
Buck Hill et la grande chanteuse Shirley Horn.
En 1959, il part à New York et se produit au Gaslight
de Greenwich Village. C’est l’époque où il
apprend la flûte et le répertoire classique avec
Julius Baker (New York Philharmonic Symphony), Murray Panitz
(Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra), Frances Blaisdell (New York
City Ballet Orchestra), Harold Bennett (Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra) et Samuel Baron (Chamber Music soliste). Il est
ensuite nommé professeur de flûte à l’Université de
New York et au Smith College de Northampton dans le Massachusetts.
De 1971 à 1979, il joue à Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
avec la formation du vibraphoniste Buddy Montgomery, frère
de Wes Montgomery. Il enseigne la flûte et le saxophone
au Conservatoire du Wisconsin et dirige un ensemble de musique
contemporaine et d’improvisation de jazz. Il joue occasionnellement
de la flûte dans l’Orchestre Symphonique et l’Orchestre
de Ballet de Milwaukee et dirige l’orchestre attitré de
la chaîne 10 de la télévision de la ville.
A New York, il joue au Newport Jazz Festival de George Wein
avec Eddie Daniels et Gary Burton. Il rencontre Frank Wess
en jouant dans le même orchestre et enregistre ensuite
avec Randy et Michaël Brecker, Lou Soloff et John Faddis.
Il a joué en concert avec l’orchestre de Michel
Legrand.
A San Francisco il éprouve une grande joie à accompagner
Ella Fitzgerald au cours de sa tournée. Il joue avec
Charlie Haden, contrebassiste et Eddie Henderson, trompettiste
dans le sextet de Herbie Hancock et le groupe de Billy Harper.
Depuis 1981, il vit et travaille en France. Il est installé
en Bretagne depuis 2012. Il a fait l’ouverture des 7 Lézards à Paris,
et se produit régulièrement en festivals, concerts,
tournées, master class à Paris, Tours, Caen,
Lyon, Rouen, Beaune, Macon, Dijon, Tournus, Nançay,
Decazeville, Blois, Montpellier, Toulouse…
Tony Pagano a joué avec des musiciens de renom tels
que Sara Lazarus, Michele Hendricks, John Handy, Curtis Fuller,
Mickey Roker, Bob Cranshaw, Hubert Laws, Tom Mallone, Rufus
Reed, Frank Foster, Georges Cables, Alain Jean-Marie, Renato
Chicco, Andrea Michelutti, Ricardo Del Fra, Sangoma Everett,
Glenn Ferris, Jean-Philippe Viret, François Théberge,
Michel Marre, Cliford Jarvis, Seigfried Kessler, Michel Zenino,
Emmanuel Bex.

TONY PAGANO - SAXOPHONE,

Tony Pagano was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA where
he was exposed, at an early age, to the saxophone and Clarinet
by his Father. Listening to live broadcasts of jazz artists
was a part of his family culture. When he was 14, he heard
Charlie parker live at “Club Harlem” in Philadelphia
which motivated him to become a jazz musician.
With a strong
foundation in classical clarinet, as well, Tony was granted
a full scholarship to study music at Southeastern Louisiana
University where Harry Evans (Bill Evans’ brother)
was the director of the jazz band in which he played. At
age 19, Tony was offered a contract as clarinetist in the
Baton Rouge, Louisiana Symphony. Upon graduating from the
University, he became instructor of woodwinds at the United
States Naval School of Music in Washington DC. Subsequently,
Tony earned a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School
of Music, concentrating on flute as his major instrument.
He has studied flute and classical repertoire with Julius
Baker (New York Philharmonic Symphony), Murray Panitz (Philadelphia
Symphony Orchestra), Frances Blaisdell (New York City Ballet
Orchestra), Harold Bennett (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra)
and Samuel Baron (Chamber Music soloist).
From the Charlie
Parker experience on, Tony lead a double life playing classical
music and jazz. In 1981 he moved to France and has performed
in various festivals such as: Jazz et Grands Vins de Bourgogne
at Beaune (Burgundy), Jazz sous les Pommiers (Normandy),
the Nice Jazz Festival, Festival Radio France in Montpellier
and Paris, Hyères Festival
(Provence), Jazz Festival in Salon-de-Provence, Mâcon,
Mine de Jazz in Decazeville... While living in various regions
in France (Paris, Normandy, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence,
Languedoc and Midi Pyrenees) Tony has performed in clubs
as well and has made several CD’s.
He has performed
with the New York City Ballet Orchestra, the Gary Burton
Orchestra at Newport Jazz Festival and recording studios
in the USA, France and Germany. He has performed with Ella
Fitzgerald, Sara Lazarus, Michele Hendricks, Tony Camillo, Frank Wess,
Gary Burton, Eddie Daniels, Eddie Henderson, John Handy,
Curtis Fuller, Mickey Roker, Bob Cranshaw, Hubert Laws, Tom

Since 1981, he has been living in France, he is living in Brittany since 2012. He and Michel Perrez
performed the 1st jazz evening at Les 7 Lezards in Paris,
which became a very active jazz club. He has performed regularly:
jazz festivals, wokshops and concerts in Paris, Tours, Caen,
Lyon, Rouen, Beaune, Macon, Dijon, Tournus, Nançay,
Decazeville, Blois, Montpellier, Toulouse…
